San Francisco-based hb+a Architects has been honored with the Silver A’ Design Award 2026 for Box Factory, a 1,750-square-foot zero energy resilience hub in rural California that proved its value during the 2022 Electra Fire by providing a safe, climate-ready refuge for the local community during evacuations and power shutoffs.
Box Factory: Award-Winning Zero Energy, Low Carbon Resilience Hub Demonstrates Climate-Ready Architecture
Box Factory, designed by hb+a Architects, stands as a pioneering example of climate-resilient architecture in wildfire-prone rural California. Completed in 2022, the 1,750-square-foot building was conceived as a zero energy, all-electric resilience hub, powered entirely by onsite solar and equipped with high-efficiency heat pumps for heating and cooling. Its thoughtful siting and orientation maximize passive comfort, with the building’s form and glazing tailored to local wind patterns and sun angles, minimizing energy demand while ensuring occupant comfort year-round.
The project’s impact was proven during the 2022 Electra Fire, when Box Factory served as a vital refuge for neighbors facing evacuations and countywide power shutoffs. Beyond emergency response, the building is intentionally programmed for everyday community use, supporting gatherings, workshops, and civic life. Its flexible, disassemblable design and low-carbon construction-including prefabricated structural elements and creative slab reuse-minimize embodied carbon and environmental disturbance, leaving the surrounding landscape largely undisturbed.
Box Factory’s performance is continuously monitored, with operational data confirming its zero energy status. Passive strategies are central to its design: a concrete floor slab provides thermal mass, operable windows and ceiling fans support cross-ventilation, and non-combustible, low-glare exterior finishes help moderate heat gain and resist wildfire embers. Drought-tolerant landscaping and on-site stormwater management further reinforce its climate-adaptive approach. The project’s holistic integration of sustainability, flexibility, and community resilience has set a new standard for rural architecture, earning it the prestigious Silver A’ Design Award in Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design for 2026.
